Question:  How do you install MIVA Mia and Merchant to work off line?

Answer:  Both Miva Mia and Merchant programs are self extracting files.  Install them to their default locations.

If you do not have the Merchant program you can download the files from your server.

Program files go in : C:\MivaMia\HTML
Data files go in : C:\MivaMia\DATA

if you installed Miva Mia to its default directory.  Maintain Directory structure integrity and download ALL sub directories and files.

If you install Merchant on your PC you can select
local files. If you downloaded it from your server you
will either have to use relative paths (i.e. ../) or
use it while you are connected to the internet and
it will pull the graphics off of your server.

Question:   For some reason my local Mia based store on http://127.0.0.1/Merchant/merchant.mv ? and same for admin.mv, just displays the html source code in the browser. Anyone know what triggers this odd behaviour.

Answer: Make sure you have Mia listening on port 80.

Add your working domain name to your own HOSTS file so your domain name will resolve locally when you are working on your site (that way all/most of your URL's will remain intact).

Make sure you don't have another web port listening, like MS-PWS or something.

Make sure Mia is loaded (smile).

Point Mia's index page to a full-loaded script page on your term, then use the Mia tray icon to pull up the page. If the script is not parsed by Mia, you might want to install Mia again.

hope that helps.

Question:  What is causing this error, Configuration Error: mivaroot is not defined  Please contact the server administrator:

Answer: Obviously the miva.conf file/Authorize file have not been properly set up
for the user to run Miva applications. You need to contact your system
administrator to fix this problem.

Question:   How does this "localhost" and "127.0.0.1" work?

Answer: The hosts file is one of the first location windoz goes to look for a name-to-address mapping. If it does not find it in the host file, it uses DNS to resolve the name to address mapping.

So if you look in the hosts file: "localhost" should map to 127.0.0.1. If you edit the file and added "
www.yourdomain.com" with IP address of "10.10.10.1" then when you type " www.yourdomain.com" in the location box of your browser, then the request will be sent to "10.10.10.1"

I use the hosts file to "fool" Miva Mia when I do things on the local computer. I simply edit the hosts file to have "
www.mydomain.com " mapped  to 127.0.0.1.  When I need to access the "local" server, I un-comment the line with the mapping in the hosts file.  When I need to access the "remote" server (on ISP), I comment the line out causing windoz to go to the nameserver for address resolution.

Question:  How can I run Mia Miva on a LAN?

Answer:  Easy. You can do it two ways:

1. Add entries to the LAN client's HOSTS file pointing to the IP for the Miva Mia box. Unless your staff are technically savvy, you might want to name the dev IP something like "testsite.com" or "betasite.com" or something. It will make for an easier psycholgical transition when you go live.

2. Let the LAN client's surf to it by IP number. [i.e. if your Mia box is 192.168.4.2 you just surf to
http://192.168.4.2/Merchant/merchant.mv.

It will not "run robustly" but it will give you a handy dev tool...
